Elgato makes great gear — and charges for the brand. If you’re budget-conscious (or just sensible), there’s real value one tier down. We compared the usual suspects on passthrough latency and build quality.

Capture cards

EVGA / AVerMedia capture cards do 1080p60 passthrough for roughly half the Elgato price. AVerMedia’s Live Gamer series is the one we’d actually recommend — drivers are stable, which is the whole game with capture cards.

Stream decks

Elgato’s Stream Deck is the default, but Loupedeck and generic macro pads do 80% of it for a third of the cost. If you just want scene-switch buttons, a $20 macro pad + free software gets you there.

Lights

Elgato Key Lights are gorgeous but pricey. Neewer and GVM ring/panel lights hit the same soft-key look for a fraction. The difference is build quality over years, not output today.

The honest take

Buy Elgato if you want zero hassle and the ecosystem (Camera Hub, Wave mics). Buy alternatives if you’re comfortable tinkering and want to keep $200 in your pocket. Both stream fine.
